Instructional sessions begin and end with reading from a novel or graphic novel to keep the emphasis on why we’re doing this—to become readers. From there, students engage in exercises designed to target orthographic mapping, the process of bonding phonemes (sounds) to their corresponding graphemes (letters). Sessions are short (45 minutes) and meant to provide convenient practice in the area that matters most to early reading.
